Delve into the history of architect Paolo Soleri’s movement to create sustainable urban landscapes, with a visit to the experimental town Arcosanti, and a tour of Cosanti, home to the studio and residence of Soleri.
Take a guided tour of Arcosanti, a community inspired by a reimagined urbanism. Located in the desert about an hour north of Phoenix, its an ongoing experiment in architecture, ecology, art, and community. A project of the Consanti Foundation, Arcosanti was founded in 1970 as an experiment in living frugally and with a limited environmental footprint. The iconic structures at Arcosanti are designed to be muti-use and facilitate the many performances, workshops and cultural programs that take place throughout the year. Built by more than 8,000 volunteers over the past 50 years, Arcosanti continues to develop and is a fascinating place to visit and tour.
Take a break for lunch on your own at one of the numerous restaurants at Gainey Ranch before we continue exploring the history of Paolo Soleri at Cosanti, the gallery and design studio he built with his wife in 1956. See the residential and craftwork structures, and watch a live bronze pour in the foundry (weather permitting). Enjoy the music of the Cosanti Originals bronze and ceramic windbells. These world-famous chimes have been handmade at Arcosanti and Cosanti by resident artisans for decades. Because the designs on every bell are hand-carved, each bell is a unique work of art.
Please note, this is a Level 3 activity. Steps, narrow hallways, and steep inclines.
