Day One
SYDNEY is a grand host that welcomes the world to its stage. In fact, the city thrives on the opportunity to show the world what it is: a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with trendsetting international cuisine, stellar architecture—think of the Sydney Opera House—and a spectacular harbor setting.

TASMAN SEA
Day Three
MELBOURNE offers a wonderful mix of Victorian architecture with world cultures. From its favored site on the banks of the Yarra River, Melbourne offers travelers some of the best shopping and theater in Australia, a varied arts scene, top-notch food and wine with restaurants to fit any taste and budget, and excellent hotels.

BASS STRAIT
Day Five
HOBART is the capital of the island state of Tasmania. There the mountains go down to the sea, and the view is dominated by snow-capped Mount Wellington, which forms a magnificent backdrop to the picturesque Salamanca Place and historic architecture of Battery Point. In general, the climate is cooler than mainland Australia.

Day Eight
MILFORD SOUND is one of New Zealand's premier natural attractions. (In summer, it's visited by 50 or more tour buses a day.) Although it's called a sound, it's really a glacier-carved fjord, with sheer mountain cliffs rising up on both sides. Waterfalls spill down the rocks—there can be hundreds after rains. Postcard-perfect Mitre Peak dominates the view if it's not covered in clouds.
DOUBTFUL SOUNDis the second-largest fjord in New Zealand's Fjordland National Park, is powerfully serene and isolated. To visit, most people take a boat across Lake Manapouri (located 20 minutes from Te Anau), and then a bus over Wilmot Pass before reaching the head of Doubtful Sound. Some people access Doubtful Sound by sea, entering via Deep Cove.
DUSKY SOUND is one of the largest and most complex fjords in New Zealand's Fiordland National Park. To the north of the sound's mouth is Resolution Island, the largest uninhabited island in New Zealand, and several large islands are in the sound itself. Dusky Sound is extremely remote, as it is only accessible by sea or air.
Day Nine
DUNEDIN (PORT CHALMERS) is distinctly Scottish in feel with stone buildings and Victorian houses, Dunedin, New Zealand, lies on the southeast coast of the South Island about 225 mi/360 km southwest of Christchurch. This university city claims New Zealand's only castle—Larnach Castle, which overlooks Port Chalmers and the harbor. You'll also find many fine museums and galleries.
Day Ten
AKAROA is a historic village with French and British roots, established around an ancient volcano. The town is only 53 mi/85 km from Christchurch.
Day Eleven
WELLINGTON is the capital of New Zealand, is located at the southern tip of the North Island. Known as Windy Wellington, it is less-visited than Auckland—410 mi/660 km to the north—and it's a pity that those who do go seldom stay more than a day.
Day Twelve
NAPIER was almost completely rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in the early 1930s, Napier, New Zealand, 205 mi/335 km northeast of Wellington on the North Island, is famous for its beautiful art-deco buildings. The art museum sponsors guided tours of the architecture on Sunday afternoons. The National Aquarium is one of the best in the Southern Hemisphere, housing turtles, seahorses, sharks and other fish, as well as rare tuatara lizards.
Day Thirteen
ROTORUA is 145 mi/235 km southeast of Auckland in the center of the North Island, sits on top of the most active geothermal region in the country, which explains why the town reeks of sulfur.
Day Fourteen
BAY OF ISLANDS has as many as 150 islands are scattered around the Bay of Islands in Northland, New Zealand, 150 mi/240 km north of Auckland. In addition to the Far North, the region merits a three- to four-day visit. We like the area's fabulous beaches, sport fishing, scuba diving and gigantic kauri trees.
Day Fifteen
AUCKLAND is New Zealand's largest, most culturally diverse and cosmopolitan city. Its European, Pacific and Asian influences make it a destination unlike any other. But its urban credentials—a flourishing cultural life and abundant commerce—are often upstaged by its breathtaking geography. Sprawled across an isthmus, the city envelops more than 40 extinct volcanoes, several of which stand in green, pastoral parks overlooking a broad harbor, gulf islands and a seemingly endless shoreline.
